The HSE estimates that stress-related illness costs Britain £7 billion a year
The Confederation of British Industry estimates that stress is the second most common cause of work-related illness, causing one in five employees to take time off. That equated to 6.7 m working days in 2000
ISMA research in 2002 shows that 64% of workers suffer from stress at work

(Wednesday 6 November)) shows that:

29% of people surveyed said stress is detrimental to their health
64% of people who are suffering stress at work believe that it is reducing their job satisfaction
14% of people who experience stress at work have sought medical help, but 78% have sought no professional help
Almost two-thirds of the UK workforce is suffering the effects of stress at work - an increase of 50% since 2001
36% stated that it is reducing their productivity
A staggering 75% of 18-24 year olds surveyed said that they had experienced over stress at work
28% of workers who experienced stress at work said that it is damaging their relationship with their colleagues; 20% their relationship with everyone at home. 14% also said that they had experienced bullying at work; and 11% that they had experienced violence at work during the last 12 months. 14% have sought medical help with the problems that stress has been causing them
Sadly, 78% of people suffering the effects of work-related stress, have sought no professional advice to help deal with it.
There is very little difference between genders, with 67% of males and 62% of females saying that they had experienced stress at work
57% of these people say that this stress has increased over the last 12 months

The most common workplace "stressors" include:

a. Too much work (62%),
b. Deadline pressures (58%),
c. Aggressive management and/or poor communications (49%),
d. An unsupportive work environment (43%)
e. And problems with maintaining an acceptable work/life balance (42%)

58% of people who experience stress at work expect the problems resulting from it to either stay the same or get worse over the next 12 months
London and the North East are the regions that are worst affected by stress at work
